Annual Green Power Awards Luncheon 2011: Pittsburgh

This year, you have two opportunities to help celebrate Pennsylvania's Green Power Heroes.

In both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, we will be honoring the businesses, organizations and individuals from across the Commonwealth who are building our 21st Century green energy economy. We will also be giving a special award in each city -- the Citizens' Choice Green Power Hero Award – based on recommendations by PennFuture’s members and supporters.

Here is the list of this year's award recipients to be honored at the Pittsburgh luncheon:

Green Power: Make It…

Plumbers Union 27

  • Your award is for installing a 42 kW solar array and a solar thermal system at the Local 27 Union Hall and Training Center and for establishing a training program for solar hot water installations.

Chatham University

  • Your award is for installing building-integrated solar thermal collectors on Chatham’s research greenhouse and on the two highest-occupancy residence halls in your Shadyside Campus in Pittsburgh.

Walnut Capital

  • Your award is for the Achievement of LEED Platinum rating on your Bakery Square Office building and for installing a 75kw solar array, the largest in the city of Pittsburgh.

Solar Unified Network of Western Pennsylvania (SUNWPA)

  • Your award is for your collaborative work to promote solar energy use and help western PA overcome barriers to the deployment of this clean energy source.

Eaton Corporation

  • Your award is for your work in developing clean energy technologies, electric vehicle charging stations, and the installation of a Solar Carport EV (electric vehicle) Charging Station at your Warrendale facility.  

John Koller & Son, Inc.;/Fairview Swiss Cheese

  • Your award is for the installation and operation of a biogas digester that provides 50 percent of your electricity needs.

Reinford Farm

  • Your award is for the installation and operation of biogas digester for electricity use and heating needs on your farm and for your home.

Kish-View Farms

  • Your award is for the installation and operation of a biogas digester to generate electricity for sale back to the grid.

WESCO International, Inc.

  • Your award is for supporting the renewable energy supply chain by distributing solar electric equipment and green building technologies.

PPG Industries, Inc.

  • Your award is for innovation and leadership in the development and manufacture of glass coatings for use in solar energy systems.

 

Green Power: Save It…

Allegheny County

  • Your award is for the many accomplishments under the County’s Sustainability Plan, including energy and cost-savings through LED lighting at the Allegheny County Jail and installing Western PA’s largest solar thermal array in the Ross Hill Senior Residence facility.

Bayer MaterialScience North American EcoCommercial Building Program

  • Your award is for the EcoCommercial Building Conference Center, a solar-powered, net-zero-energy, net-zero-emissions facility showcasing sustainable building technologies.

Kingsley Association

  • Your award is for the Larimer Neighborhood Energy Challenge, providing neighbor to neighbor assistance and support for Larimer residents to reduce their energy consumption.   

Pittsburgh Penguins and the Sports & Exhibition Authority

  • Your award is for The Consol Energy Center achieving LEED Gold certification, becoming the first NHL arena to reach that standard of sustainability.

ACTION-Housing, Inc.            

  • Your award is for your ongoing commitment to create affordable housing through the installation of energy efficiency and green building technologies in thousands of homes in western Pennsylvania.

Michael Merck/West Penn Energy Solutions

  • Your award is for your contributions to the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy and for contributing to Pittsburgh’s first net-zero energy rehab project in the East Liberty neighborhood.

Ann Gerace

  • Your award is for your tireless years of work to advance energy conservation in SW PA through Conservation Consultants, Incorporated.

Drs. Sherwood and Shawna Johnson

  • Your award is for your commitment to construct a net-zero energy home with geothermal heat, solar energy and radiant floor heating technologies and for your ongoing advocacy of clean energy.

 

Green Power: Buy It…

evolveEA

  • Your award is for purchasing 100 percent of your office’s electricity from wind energy, and for your overall commitment to reducing your company’s carbon pollution and to sustainability.

 

Green Power: Move It…

ChargeCar

  • Your award is for community-centered teamwork aimed at making electric vehicles practical and affordable.

Pittsburgh Regional Clean Cities Group

  • Your award is for working to promote and build infrastructure for the use of alternative fuels in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas.

Fossil Free Fuel

  • Your award is for producing renewable fuels with a focus on the commercialization of a pure plant oils as an alternative to fossil fuels.

 

Green Power: Leadership…

Michael Barton

  • Your award is for your work through the Environmental Resources Information, Technology and Education Center, where your efforts to provide credible education about wind energy have enlightened decision-makers, children, citizens and organizations about its many benefits.

Congressman Mike Doyle

  • Your award is for your consistent and continued leadership in supporting policies that promote reliance on and development of renewable energy, and for ensuring that federal resources that foster clean energy in SW PA.

Jeanne Zang

  • Your award is for your long-term dedication and volunteer advocacy to promote clean energy and climate policy, and for persuading the others members of Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church to power their church and their homes using Pennsylvania-made renewable energy to purchase.

 

Green Power: Visionary

Larry Schweiger

  • Your award is for your unparalleled leadership in raising awareness about the critical impacts of climate change throughout the world, and in your commitment to employing clean energy solutions.

 

Citizens' Choice Green Power Hero Award:

Mark Dixon from YERT (Your Environmental Road Trip)

  • Your award is for highlighting the importance and possibilities of clean energy, energy efficiency and sustainable living to broad audiences through creative media in a docu-comedy format, educating and inspiring people to create a healthier and greener future."
